Bruce’s background in finance is unique. He began studying finance before ever setting foot in a college classroom. After saving some money while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Bruce decided to invest this money. In 1999, a financial advisor recommended he invest in a telecommunications mutual fund. Six months later his $2000 investment shrank to $200 after the internet bubble burst. Bruce vowed he would never again give his hard earned money to anyone without knowing what they were doing with it. During his downtime in the Marines, he studied finance and investing. After serving in the Marine Corps, Bruce worked in banking while completing both a bachelor and master’s degrees in Business Administration from the University of Sioux Falls.
Learning finance (without instruction), then learning it in academia and its application in commercial banking, allowed Bruce to critically analyze the traditional methods used to teach collegiate level finance. He better understood why student’s often struggled learning finance.
Bruce began teaching finance classes in 2011 and has shared his story and teachings to hundreds of participants and students. Students and former participant dubbed him the “translator” for his unique ability to translate complex concepts and information into application.
Bruce lives in Brookings, SD with his wife and two children. He teaches classes and workshops at South Dakota State University and the University of Sioux Falls as an adjunct faculty member. He also provides consultation regarding personal and corporate finance and investing.
